This faraway land bordered with waters on one side, and craggy mountains on the other became a peaceful place for the vineyards lying in numerous valleys. The nature itself gave Chile privileged climate that made it an exceptional place for growing vines. History
Vineyards of Chile - valuable genetic material of the future
The first vines appeared in Chile in the middle of 16th century along with the Spanish conquistadors.
Three centuries later, as a result of economic boom, seedling of European grapes was brought from France
and a wave of Bordeaux-style wine production, which was then a role model, began in the country.
Uniqueness of Chilean winemaking is cultivation of grape vines on its own roots. This became possible
because the vines came to the New World before the infestation of phylloxera in Europe and its’ total
absence in Chile.
So nowadays it’s Chilean grapes that could be called indigenously French. Totally exterminated by the disease in France and seemed to be completely unrecoverable Carmenere grapes was found in Chile at the end of 20th century and became the hallmark of country’s winemaking.
